Guernica in Spanish language means a town in Spain which included the seat of Basque parliament; destroyed in 1937 by German bombers during the Spanish civil war.
Guernica; It is a mural painting inspired by the bombing of Guernica when a German warplane with the support of Italy bombed the city on April 26, 1937 with the aim of spreading panic and fear to the resistance forces during the Spanish Civil War during the government authority of the Second Spanish Republic from 1931 to 1939.
A painter drawing a fresco to be displayed in the Spanish Pavilion at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne, which was held in Paris in 1937. The painting included the use of oil colors and burlap, and several colors were used, namely; Dark blue, black and white, about 3.5 meters long and 7.8 meters wide
The objective of drawing Guernica
The Second Spanish Republic commissioned Picasso in January 1937 to paint a very large mural to be displayed at the Paris International Exhibition of the same year, which prompted Picasso to dispense with the project he was preparing for, and also to abandon a residence in Paris after hearing about the bombing of Guernica. On April 26, 1937, after the poet Juan Larria visited him and encouraged him to paint this event, he began to draw a series of sketches of the Grenca Incident, leading to the desired painting.
Guernica was painted using a matte paint made at Picasso's request for very little gloss. American artist John Ferrin helped Picasso extend the painting. Photographer Dora Maar, who was working with Picasso on his paintings and studio, taught Picasso the technique of the chart. The photographer documented Picasso's drawing of the painting step by step, believing that this would help him support the cause and the message that the painting carried.
The painter of Guernica
Picasso worked on the painting for 35 consecutive days and was able to finish it on June 4, 1937. As for Pablo Ruiz Picasso, he was born on October 25, 1881, a Spanish-born painter, sculptor, plastic artist and one of the most famous artists of the twentieth century, and is credited with founding the Cubism movement in art. He died on April 8, 1973 in Mougins, France.
The tragic side of Guernica
Guernica shows the misfortunes of war and the enduring it causes upon people, especially guiltless regular folks. This work has acquired a fantastic status, turning into an interminable token of war, an enemy of war image, and an exemplification of harmony.
The description of the paint
The photo is a public protest against the Nazi bombing of Guernica. It is filled with feelings of violence, suffering, sadness and suffering. From her breath is the tragic sense of death, destruction and devastation. There are no bombs or city in the picture, just a flame of fire.
The images depicted on the plate are transferred sufficiently in a simplified form. It creates the feeling of being in the basement. On the face of a man and a woman facing the viewer, there is a mouth wide open from the shriek, eyes turned over the forehead and two slits.
On the right side of the panel, you can see figures extending from a burning building.
Their windows from this building are located women. Near a man with his arms raised, two human outlines appear tense and terrified, but full of determination.
On the left side of the painting is a crying mother, her head back, holding a dead child in her arms. This is a picture that symbolizes the grief of all mothers.
the death of their children. Next to it is the image of a bull with a clearly expressed indifference, trampling on a fallen warrior. In his hands is a broken sword, which is in a pose, somewhat reminiscent of a crucifixion.
The symbols behind the Guernica
The warrior symbolizes the physical suffering of the viewer. The symbol of the bull is solidity, the personification of fascism, and the horse is the suffering of the innocent.
The woman depicted with the profile of an ancient goddess holds a burning lamp with her arm extended forward. Instead of a schoolgirl, she has a light bulb. Her mouth is wide, she screams, but no one hears. The horse beats in a fit of convulsion. Above all these pictures is an incandescent lamp.
Everything around us perishes and collapses. The picture is full of symbols of anger, pain and revenge. The streaks play a big role, sometimes it's thin and round, and then suddenly sharp and broken. They seem to express the human psyche with horror and pain.
